Art Glass and Steel Sun Symbol Wall Sculpture

$225.00

Glass and Metal | Made to Order

This handcrafted glass and steel wall sculpture interprets a Southwestern sun symbol through contemporary materials and traditional handwork. The design is inspired by the Zia sun symbol, a form widely associated with the Zia Pueblo of northwestern New Mexico and famously represented on the New Mexico state flag.

The specific basket-weave motif incorporated into the glass center is derived from a historical design created by a Northern Nevada Washoe Tribe basket weaver in the late 1800s, lending regional and historical context to the piece. This work is offered as an artistic interpretation, honoring Indigenous design traditions rather than representing an original ceremonial object.

Materials & Construction

The sculptural steel frame is cut, shaped, and welded by hand, then torch-heated to develop natural heat-induced coloration. A clear protective coating is applied to preserve the finish and prevent rust, making the piece suitable for long-term display.

The glass center is constructed from four individual pieces of art glass, hand cut and kiln-fused into a solid form approximately ½ inch thick. The base glass color is a soft caramel brown, chosen for warmth and depth. The basket-weave design is applied by hand using vitreous enamel (powdered glass mixed with liquid medium) and fired again in the kiln, permanently fusing the design into the glass surface. Once fired, the imagery becomes part of the glass itself and will not chip, peel, or fade over time.

The piece is finished with an inconspicuous copper hanger mounted on the back for secure wall display.
